August Challenge: Day 4 – A Few CRAZY Years

Today’s Fitness Cheerleader August fitness challenge asks, how have you changed in the past two years?

Where to begin with this one?!  Well let’s start here:
Feeling very large in the summer of ’10!

In August 2010, I was eagerly awaiting the arrival of our first child.  Cora Justine was born on September 19, 2010 and little did I know how she would forever change my world.

Two short weeks later, my husband deployed to Iraq until May 2011.  Throughout the course of Jake’s deployment, I continued to work full-time and struggled with the challenges of pseudo single motherhood.  During the deployment, to help maintain my sanity and to try and regain some self confidence, I started to run again.  Progress was slow and steady and my friend Caitlin agreed to visit me in Texas for a 10k race in Austin.  It was about 6 months after Cora’s birth and I didn’t train as much as I should have given the shape I was in at the time.  I was under the impression that I could just get out there and run as I always had done before.  Boy was I wrong.  It was painful.  I was really sore and cursed the fact that I had to have a cesarean.

After that race, I didn’t run again until after Jake came home in May.  That summer, we had orders to leave Texas and move to Maryland so that he could start graduate school.  I had made so many amazing friendships in Texas that the move really hurt.  Again, running helped that transition.

Hello Maryland…

At this same time, Caitlin and I also had the brilliant idea of running a half marathon together, our first.  In September 2011, I got serious and started a training plan.  I knew I needed to be better prepared for the half because I did not do such a great job with preparing for the 10k.  Training and running that half marathon changed me.  While the race was really painful and I still felt the after effects of the cesarean, I knew I wanted to run more.

I signed up for another race, the Disney Princess Half Marathon.  This time, I convinced my friend Niki and my husband Jake to run with me.  I blew away my goal to set a PR and finished with a time of 02:00:30.  I was over the moon!

After my second half at Disney, I started my blog, Lisa Runs for Cupcakes, to help keep myself accountable to my fitness goals.  For me, running has always been a bit of an escape, a place to sit in my thoughts.  Today, it continues to keep me centered so that I can wear the many hats of me!
