Dumbo Double Dare: The Racecation

These days, I often find a race and then build a vacation around it.  That my friends is called a racecation.  Labor Day weekend, Jake and I headed to Disneyland for the inaugural runDisney Dumbo Double Dare Challenge.  The Challenge included a 10k on Saturday followed by the half marathon on Sunday.  Due to work schedules we flew in separately.  I flew in on Thursday since I was running both races and it was really nice to have a bit of downtime before Jake got into town on Friday.

We stayed at the beautiful Grand Californian.  I enjoyed the location since it was right in the middle of the parks, Downtown Disney, and a lot of restaurants.  But, the first night I was there, I took advantage of the room service since I was absolutely exhausted.  I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious everything tasted.  And, the balcony was very nice and allowed for a great view of Downtown Disney and the fireworks just before bed.

Friday morning, I was up bright and early thanks to the time change.  I caught a glimpse of the #disneylandhalfmeetup folks running by my hotel balcony and then decided that I needed to go on a quest for coffee!  Once I entered the lobby area, I saw another woman with coffee.  She kindly directed me to the Disneyland Hotel.  Thank goodness!  Once I had my coffee in hand, I found Pam and Christine from We Run Disney {They have one of the most comprehensive runDisney blogs out there.  Go check them out!}  It really was so nice to chat with them about life and Disney.

With the persuasion of the We Run Disney duo, I decided to hop in line for the Expo with them.  I did not get a Coast to Coast t-shirt at the Princess Half so it was now or never to brave the lines.  Honestly, this was my worst decision of the trip!  FOUR HOURS in lines.  There was lack of coordination by runDisney in maintaining the lines and a bit of tension in the air amongst the runners.  It was not the way I hoped to start a weekend at the Happiest Place on Earth.  Thankfully I was by myself so that I could navigate the crowds but if my daughter was with me, this would have proved challenging.

Later that afternoon, I met up with some of the ladies from Team Tough Chik.  It was so nice to meet these ladies in real life!  We definitely have to do more toughie meet-ups in the future. Then it was off to visit two of my high school friends in Newport Beach before picking the hubby up at the airport.  Talk about a jam packed day!

Saturday I woke up bright and early for the Disneyland 10k, the first half of the Dumbo Dare Challenge.  More on the race soon! 😉

After the race and a shower, we made our way over to Disneyland and met up with some friends at Club 33.  Yes, you heard me correctly.  CLUB 33!  It was just as amazing in real life as I had imagined!  We had such a fun time hanging out with them and are so thankful for the invite to the Club.  It really is a blessing that running has connected me with so many fun and interesting people!  Plus, the meal was delicious and the dessert bar was just divine!  And, yes I included a photo of the toilets because it really is a throne.Club 33 Disneyland

After brunch, we wandered around Disneyland and took in some of the rides.  It was the perfect day!

Sunday morning, we both ran the Disneyland Half Marathon.  After the race, we showered and made our way to California Adventure.  We had a blast on all of the rides and took advantage of the fact that it was so hot out that the parks were practically empty!

This racecation was so much fun and  I hope we get to go back to Disneyland again soon!

Do you racecation?  What was your best racecation?  Who else ran Dumbo?! Let’s hear about your trip!
