Review: Urban Remedy Metabolism Kit

As you can probably gather from the name of my blog, I have an insane sweet tooth. Honestly, sometimes, I hate that I have such a bad sweet tooth.  So, when I received an e-mail from Urban Remedy asking if I was interested in participating in their #myurbanremedy challenge, I knew I had to do it.  Maybe the fact that a co-worker also recently asked me if I was pregnant {Note:  Guys, don’t ever ask a chick if she is pregnant!} or that I am feeling ho-hum about my marathon training also had a little something to do with my decision to say yes.  Once that internal debate was settled, Urban Remedy helped me decide which cleanse to try based on what they had to offer for a sugar addict that is attempting to train for a marathon.  The result was using the Urban Remedy Metabolism Kit coupled with an additional meal replacement shake.

In checking out their website, I quickly learned that taking the #myurbanremedy challenge would also involve a three-day detox period before and after the cleanse.  Sunday morning, after a pancake breakfast {oops!}, I cleaned up my act.  No alcohol, no caffeine, and no sugar were the hardest feats of those three days.  I like eating clean, I just tend to like a glass of wine and a cupcake at the end of the day! On Tuesday night, the package with my meals and shakes arrived.  It was awesome!  I packed up everything I would need for work the next day and went to bed pretty excited to get things going!

Here’s a breakdown of my Urban Remedy food and drinks throughout the day:

Urban Remedy

Breakfast kicked off with the Diet Tea {tea bags shown in photo} and Green Berry Juice with a Diet Spike.  The Diet Tea is designed to be consumed 15 minutes prior to drinking your juice.  The herbal blend is made to aid with digestion, reduce bloating and curb your appetite. I really enjoyed the Green Berry juices each morning.  This drink contained chia, blueberry, strawberry, goji berry, pineapple, kale, spinach, acai and stevia.  It’s a bit thick in terms of consistency but the flavors are great for breakfast.  Tip:  I added the Diet Spike to the juices for the tastiest results.  I tried drinking the Diet Spike like a shot {Too Strong!} and cutting it with a little bit of water {Gag!} but thankfully you can barely taste it in the juice {Win!}.  And, if you don’t have juice to put it in, put it in the tea.

I had my first snack of the day around 10am.  Having the No Oatmeal Cookies as a mid-morning treat at work seemed so wrong!  These little bites contained almond flour, apples, dates, almonds, currants, sea salt and vanilla.  No added sugar but so sweet!  This snack was combined with the Time Machine juice.  The first time I drank this, the kick at the end of each sip was a bit of a surprise.  I guess there really was cayenne in there! Don’t worry, it’s not too bad and blends nicely with the flavors of the acai and lemon.

Lunch consisted of another round of Diet Tea and the Diet Spike with Spring Rolls.  IHonestly, this was my least favorite meal of the day.  The dipping sauce was too spicy for me.  But, I will say that this was really easy to eat on the go at work.  And, after Day 1, I decided to just ditch the dipping sauce and eat the spring rolls plain.

Shortly after lunch, it was time for another snack of Diet Tea and the Diet Spike with an Apple.  And, then MY FAVORITE….

Now, this is a detour from the typical Metabolism Kit.  In order to maintain my running during this cleanse, an additional PB&J Shake was added to my diet.  I have to say that this was my favorite part of the plan!  The PB&J shake was absolutely delicious and gave me the bit of sweet!  I need to order more ASAP!  But, thanks to the meal replacement shake, I had a few fantastic runs all while taking part in the challenge.

IMG_7232And, to end the day, I had the Zen Salad and Glow juice.  I will admit that on Day 1, I only drank half of the Glow but I had no problems drinking it on Day 2 and Day 3.  It definitely is a GREEN juice in that it contains cucumber, celery, spinach, parsley, kale, E3 live and lemon.  Since it was my least favorite of the juices, I tried to take a sip in between bites of that amazing salad.  I think I could eat the Zen Salad every single day.  The nuts and dressing gave it a little something extra!

So, now that you saw what I ate, I will share a little bit of how I felt while using the Urban Remedy Metabolism Kit.

Wednesday:  Day 1 – This day was really, really tough.  I expected to feel hungry and I was surprised that I felt full throughout the day.  Just as I was starting to get hungry, it was time for another snack or meal.  After work, I even went for a run and it went really well.  I hit some paces that I haven’t seen in a while!  However, I had the mother of all headaches on Day 1.  I have a history of migraines but it wasn’t at that point.  And, in the name of the cleanse, I did not want to resort to any over the counter or prescription medication to resolve the headache so  I ended up going to bed early this night.  This was by far the hardest day of them all.

Thursday: Day 2 – I woke up feeling really refreshed.  I was really relieved to not have a headache.  My energy levels were great throughout the day and I went on another run.  Again, I had plenty of energy and a fantastic run!

Friday: Day 3 –  Another fantastic day of feeling great, no headaches, and lots of energy!  All in all, I would say it was a success!

Final Thoughts:  After the cleanse, I honestly do not have any cravings to run out and have a cupcake or a glass of wine.  Yea, you read that right.  I don’t have any cravings for sweets or alcohol, my two biggest vices.  And, on Saturday morning, we all went shopping for a clean menu for the next week.  Thanks to this challenge, I have a new goal of eating clean for the next few weeks until I run Ragnar Napa Valley.  Given that my training has had some ups and downs, I want to put my best self forward for the race.  That means that I want to continue to feel as awesome as I do right now.  And, this is me being really honest in that I admit that this highlighted how much work I have to do on my eating habits.  Now, don’t get me wrong.  I still plan to allow myself treats.  But, they need to become treats again and not something that is an everyday occurrence.

Plus, I have lost 5 pounds over the course of these 9 days.  This is a great place to start and kickoff a healthy eating streak!  Who knew participating in a cleanse could really bring about so much change in the matter of a week.  Now, let’s see if it sticks for the next few weeks.  I’m really excited to make  more of an effort with my eating habits and continue with a little bit more weight loss.

So, tell me, have you ever participated in a cleanse?  Did you ever have a moment that made you step back and take a look at your eating patterns, why you eat, how you feel eating certain foods, etc? What’s your biggest hurdle when it comes to eating healthy?

  1. You go girl! I have always wanted to try a no sweets or sugar detox of some kind but never get up the courage to do it! I’m guessing the first few days are the hardest. Perhaps one day I’ll take the leap and try a cleanse like this!

  2. I have been curious about juice cleanses, but too hesitant to try one. I loved that this allowed food too.

  3. Hmmm I like how they have actual food in this. I need to do some kind of sugar detox ha! Good for you for sticking with it!

  4. That looks like a decent cleanse! I did a juice cleanse a few months ago and actually didn't mind it. I didn't get headaches at all and felt full the entire time. I like that this one has actual food and not just juice!
My recent post Wonder Mom Wednesday Link Up: Reasons WHY I exercise (I know you want to know)

    • I don't know if I could do an all juice cleanse. I liked the idea of actually having some clean items to munch on throughout the day. Helped psychologically with the cleanse!

  5. I would never do a cleanse. Every single person I know who has done one has gained back the "quick start" weight within 2 months and they are back to eating sugar or whatever it is they were trying to "kick" through the cleanse. So what's the point? It's just an expensive crash diet from what I've seen.

    • Thanks for writing and for some I am sure you are right. I really don't consider my experience to be a crash diet given the amount of calories that I was eating. Personally, I wanted to rid myself of the habit of having dessert on a very regular basis. And, for me that has worked. I still don't think I could do a traditional cleanse, with just juice, given the amount of exercise I like to do, but the Metabolism Kit worked well for me since it incorporate food in addition to the juices. Since I have maintained this for a month or so now, I have to say it has been a positive experience for me.

  6. Im doing the exact cleanse now I am on day 2. I do not like the spring rolls. I was wondering are they supposed to be cooked or something to make the taste a little better? I don't like the salad either
