New Year + Holiday Ramblings

Happy New YearHappy New Year!  I fell off the face of the planet.  Well, that is a bit of an exaggeration but if you are a blogger, not posting for a month is practically disappearing into the night in the blogging world.   Yet, if you follow me on other social media platforms, you probably knew that I didn’t really disappear for good.  I just tend to have a difficult time keeping this particular piece of social media up to date with regular postings.

Well, what is regular posting anyway?  This year, I definitely would not consider myself a regular content creator.  I work full-time outside of this blog and I enjoy keeping this as an enjoyable way to connect with fellow athletes.  And, the second this starts feeling like another job, my writing gets boring, I dread it, and well, I stop writing.  So, I haven’t exactly outlined where I hope to go with my blog in the New Year but I would like to increase my commitment to providing content on at least a weekly basis.  For some bloggers, that is nothing but for me, I need to draw the line in the sand somewhere and I like the idea of baby steps.  I might try to tease out my blogging goals a little more in-depth just so that I can hold myself accountable to them this year.

So, now that is out-of-the-way, what on earth have I been up to?! I’m sure you are all just dying to know…right? December is a pretty action packed month at work.  I’m a social worker and one of our fun, hallmark events for the community is our holiday reception.  It’s exhausting but so worth it to play Santa’s elf for a night and see all of the excited little faces that are eager to meet the jolly old man himself.  Elf

And, considering that I decided to take a full two-week plus vacation at the end of the month, that jazzed things up a bit {read chaos!}.  I procrastinated my Christmas shopping, holiday cards, wrapping, the whole nine and still ended up finished with all my baking the weekend prior to the holidays.  We even managed plenty of time to visit family in Connecticut and take in the Nutcracker at Lincoln Center before our travels.

UkuleleSeriously though, I had my eye on the prize of a long vacation away from work to get me through those rough couple of weeks. We ventured to both Maine and Florida and enjoyed tons of time with family.  We do not have the luxury of having all of our family in one spot so it was lovely to have everyone on my husband’s side come together for Christmas in Maine.  And, Santa brought Cora’s ukulele so life was really good!  Then, with a one day pit stop at home in New York, we made our way down to Florida to visit my family through the New Year.  It was hectic but it was worth it.Florida

This week, I jumped back into the work saddle.  It certainly is rough getting back into the swing of our daily routine.   Then, sadly, mid-week I woke up with a killer migraine.  This hasn’t happened to me in two years and I still don’t know what the trigger was yesterday.  I mean, I get fairly bad headaches regularly but I haven’t had an ocular migraine in the longest.  To be perfectly honest, they are really freaking scary – loss of vision, numbness, vomiting and then the head-splitting headache.  So, needless to say, I ended up in the ER for some pain medication and some fluids.  This is not exactly the way I hoped to start the New Year.  So, thanks to that, I ended up with a few more days off work and am hoping to start-up my training plan next week.  Baby steps folks.

I hope that you all had a happy and healthy start to your New Year!  Anyone else happy to get into the swing of a regular routine now that the holidays are over?

  1. Looks like you had a lovely holiday and vacation! Getting back into a routine is hard but I'm happy to be back to being in my apt and getting into the groove again after a really lazy week and half off.

sorry to hear about the migrane my mom gets those way too often and they are debilitating for her. sounds like you had an awesome whirlwind time with family though which is awesome! going from cold to sunny florida how fun. love the socks for you elf outfit 🙂

    • It's been about two years since my last butt kicking migraine. I can't imagine getting them on a regular basis. They really do knock you out. Sorry your mom has to deal with them!

  5. Sounds like a fun vacation! Sorry you had to come back to a migraine! It's been a bit of a rough week trying to get back into the swing of things – the alarm is still an unpleasant surprise every morning. I might be used to it again sometime next week.

  6. Oh friend, what a way to start the new year! 🙁 I hope you're feeling better!! I feel ya on consistency and blogging. When life got crappy this summer, I couldn't even deal with it. Sometimes it's just too much…but that's why it's our hobby and not our job 😉 Happy New Year!

    • Thanks! Consistency is tough when there are so many other things pulling you in different directions. I'm happy blogging continues to be a hobby. I can't imagine joining in the cut-throat ranks of bloggers looking to make $$ 😉

  7. oh man!! sorry to hear you ended up in the ER. I knew you were vacationing so didn't want to message you. Hope you're feeling better soon! I love your little family 🙂 looks like you had a great time!

    • Thanks! I know. We haven't had our usual chatter. It was nice to get away but it is also nice to get back and get into a routine. However, I could do without that little thing called work 😉

  8. Oh man, I hope you are feeling better! Migraines are no joke and the word "ocular" sounds particularly awful. I recently had a lovely must-lay-down-on-the-cold-spinning-bathroom-floor moment last week when I upped my mileage by 50% trying to fit in the right long run distance before my next half (I suppose that's why they say not to do that) so not quite on the normal routine again yet. My big 2016 goal is to start a blog with race recaps, so if you have any advice or favorite resources please send them my way! And stay healthy!

    • Yes, ocular is a fancy way of saying that it starts off by messing with my vision. I haven't had one in a few years so I hope they don't decide to make a regular appearance. Be careful upping your mileage that much! Although, I suspect that you understand that now that you met the floor! How's training going? If you need to e-mail me/message me about blogging, feel free. I learned a whole lot through trial and error…. and hiring professional for the areas where I lack patience! Excited for you!

      • I have made peace with how much walking there will be this weekend, plus it's my first runDisney experience so I'm too excited to be upset. Thanks for the encouragement on both fronts!

  1. […] to even attempt to start blogging again but I’m going for it. I caught you up on my holidays in my last post so I thought I would share some exciting things that are in the works for […]
