KT Tape Launches Products and Support for Rio 2016

Last week, I had the amazing opportunity to head into NYC for a KT Tape product launch at Chelsea Piers. For those of you that are new to the product, KT Tape is a leader in sports medicine taping products. It provides pain relief solutions, support for sports related injuries, and serves as a recovery tool. And, no need to worry – KT Tape is not only used by professional athletes and Olympians but by every day athletes, like us. With the growth of KT Health, KT products have been adopted for use in nearly every sport. At the launch event, Greg Venner, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of KT Health, announced a new official partnership with Team USA by providing support and pain relief to athletes as they prepare for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In Rio, you will see KT Tape support seven total U.S. national governing bodies, including USA Cycling, USA Gymnastics, USA Track & Field, USA Triathlon, USA Rugby and USA Wrestling, and U.S. Soccer.

At the launch, Greg Venner, CEO of KT Health, opened the event and remarked, “Our products are designed to be used by every athlete, no matter the sport, enabling them to train longer so that they can finish stronger, and we are proud to align our brand with some of the best in the world.” To link-up with Mar, Courtney, and Cynthia‘s Friday Five link-up, here are the FIVE latest products added to the KT Tape lineup:

  • KT Tape PRO EXTREME™: an elastic sports tape for pain relief and support in extreme conditions. PRO EXTREME is made of KT Tape’s exclusive synthetic material, engineered for maximum durability with our strongest adhesive for the ultimate adhesion. PRO EXTREME can be worn for 4-7 days at a time and is specially designed to provide effective support during strenuous activity through extreme conditions including wet conditions, high heat and high humidity. It’s also perfect for those with oily skin. {Featured image above.}
  • KT Tape PRO USA:  an elastic sports tape for pain relief and support in everyday conditions.  PRO USA limited edition tape features the Team USA and USA print.  PRO USA can be worn for 4-7 days at a time and is specially designed to provide effective support during strenuous activity and in harsh conditions such as humidity, cold, and even the pool.  The limited edition Olympic tape is the official licensed tape of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams. {Featured image above.}
  • KT Recovery+™ Recovery Patch: specially designed to reduce swelling and inflammation from muscle injuries and its accompanying pain. KT Recovery+™ patches work by microscopically lifting the skin away from the muscle and fascia below which decompresses the area. This allows for improved circulation in the affected area while also allowing faster removal of lymphatic fluid buildup caused by the injury.
  • KT FLEX™: specially engineered to provide more effective comfortable support for weak or injured knees. KT FLEX is for athletes, fitness enthusiasts, or those recovering from injuries who want extra support for knee joints without the bulk and restriction of a stabilizing sleeve.
  • KT Recovery+™ ICE/HEAT: KT Recovery+™ Ice/Heat Compression Therapy System, interchangeable ice and heat packs, is a new way to treat muscles for peak performance or to speed recovery from a challenging workout or injury. The adjustable design provides ice/heat therapy to a wide variety of targeted body areas. Unlike other ice/heat therapy products on the market, KT Recovery+™ Ice/Heat is portable and allows for increased mobility and easier use before, during, or after physical activity.

In attendance, to assist with the product launch were four KT Tape athletes, Olympic runner Meb Keflezighi, paralympic swimmer Tucker Dupree, gymnastic legend Kerri Strug, and 3-time Olympic gold medalist in volleyball, Kerri Walsh Jennings.  After hearing from CEO, Greg Venner on the Rio 2106 partnership and all the latest product updates from Russell Schleiden, we were able to meet with each one of the Olympic athletes to talk all things KT Tape.KT Tape Athletes

Kerri Strug:  Olympic Gold Medalist, Kerri Strug, a member of the 1996 Magnificent Seven team, spoke with us about her time in the Olympics, her excitement for the athletes training for and competing in Rio and tidbits of  her life in Arizona.  Now, the full-time working mother of two looks to running to stay fit and has even completed several marathons.  As a retired gymnast, Kerri spoke about how KT Tape is changing the game for gymnasts today.  KT Tape provides external support for the muscles, tendons and ligaments and will give the athletes that extra edge in training and competition.  Kerri is looking forward to seeing Team USA dominate the women’s gymnastics competition in Rio.

Tucker Dupree:  The three-time Paralympic medalist is charismatic and is pretty darn hilarious.  Yet, what was so inspiring about this athlete was hearing how becoming a blind at the age of 17 fueled his fire to work and train harder than ever before.  When doctors told him that his life would never be normal, they were right.  In seeking to prove his point, he became an extraordinary athlete.  So how does he use KT Tape?  Tucker rehabilitated a shoulder injury and utilized KT Tape in the recovery process.  Today, Tucker mentioned that his favorite KT Tape products are the Team USA PRO Tape and the new KT Recovery+™ ICE/HEAT for recovery.  My favorite tidbit from our time with Tucker?  He hates running! #fishoutofwater

Meb Keflezighi:  I will admit, I was most excited to meet Meb!  As a runner, I was very interested to hear about his journey into running.  It reminded me that I need to pick up his book!  Meb also shared a bit about what it means to be an aging athletes.  He shared that his training has changed in that he needs more recovery time, stressed the importance of cross training, and discussed how nutrition is a huge piece of the puzzle.  Meb also shared a little bit behind his plan to stop running marathons competitively once he races 26 marathons.  Since Meb will also be 42 years old next year, it is a bit serendipitous that he will complete his quest at that age.  Meb is currently on #23 and Rio 2016 will be number #24.  Meb shared that NYCM is his favorite race so I suppose we will have to wait and see where he decides to run #25 and #26!  What is most impressive about Meb is his desire to give back to the running community – something he hopes to be able to focus on when he stops competitively running marathons.  I can’t wait to watch Meb in Rio!  {And Meb, thanks for taking a lap with us!}

Kerri Walsh Jennings:  To close out the event, I had the opportunity to speak with Kerri.  As the very first athlete with KT Tape, Kerri spoke so highly of all of the products and described KT Health as always being ahead of the pack.  In 2016, Kerri’s current partner is April Ross.  Kerri discussed her challenges with injuries as blessings.  After a fairly recent right shoulder injury, Kerri reported that she was forced to learn how to become a leftie and used KT Tape in the recovery process.   Talk about using a disadvantage to your advantage!  Kerri also mentioned that her injury forced her and April to grow closer together as teammates.  She described their team as having a synergy between them and said that they accept each other and challenge each other to be better.  The shared vision they have is what I hope takes them to the top in Rio!

In the weeks to come, I hope to share more about these products as I have the opportunity to incorporate them into my training and recovery.  I have a feeling that the KT Recovery+™ Ice/Heat Compression Therapy System and the KT Recovery+™ patches are going to make a regular appearance in my running and recovery toolkit!

KT Tape products are available for purchase at partner retailers including Wal-Mart, DICK’S Sporting Goods and Sports Authority, as well as online at KTTAPE.com.  Keep your eyes out for these new products to hit the market!

  1. I have read about this event on several blogs. How cool you got to meet the Olympics. I would have loved to meet Kerri Strug. I was in gymnastics when I was younger and loved watching it.

    I have used KT tape before but I have to say, it did not stay on well at all ;( I ended up using rock tape instead.

    It looks like they have some new products that might be worth given them another try.

    Great pics with the athletes!

    • Yes! I will say that my first shot at using KT Tape was horrible. It didn't last… mostly due to user error. I had it put on at a race expo another time to learn the application and was good to go ever since! I think that PRO is the way to go – a bit more sticky!

  5. Felix Alicea says:

    I have used KT Tape for over six years and am glad to see that they have made a product for extreme conditions that has a stronger adhesive. I use it on both my ankles for support and my right knee for runner’s knee. I usually keep it on for a week. Can you tell me when the product (KT Tape Pro Extreme) will be available for sale.

    All the best,
    Felix Alicea
