Exploring Missouri: Weston Bend State Park

weston-bend-state-parkLast weekend, we finally adventured out to Weston Bend State Park.  Weston Bend State Park is located is the Platte County city of Weston, Missouri and covers 1,133.08 acres. The park provides scenic views of the Missouri River, trails for hiking and biking, picnicking facilities, and a campground.

Weston Bend State Park – Paved Trails

We opted to check out one of the paved trails during this visit since Cora wanted to bike with Jake using her Piccolo from Burley.  Cora and I received this bike just prior to moving to Kansas.  Now that we are settled, we are so happy that it is getting the mileage it deserves!  Honestly, she is all smiles every time she hops on it!

While Jake and Cora rode the loop, I opted to get in two loops of running, totaling about 5.5 miles.  There were some solid uphills and downhills on the loop.  The signage even requests that bicyclists dismount and walk three of the inclines.  As a runner, I appreciated that there weren’t going to be any surprises speeding down the steep, winding inclines.

This park is fairly close to home; about 30 minutes door to gate.  I think we will have to make a repeat visit again soon.  The weather is just too perfect here right now!  We waited all summer for these temperatures 😉

Next time we head out there, we want to hit the trailhead in the town of Weston.  One of the trails connects the state park with the city of Weston.  This would be a perfect run since it is about 1.25 miles to Weston and 2 miles to the trailhead near Beverly. I’ve heard there are still some changes in elevation on this route which is perfect for training.  Although, I did learn that part of this particular trail is gravel.  Not an issue if I want to run but I’m not sure how Cora feels about gravel while riding her bike with Jake.  I guess we will have to explore a little more!

Do you like to travel to nearby state parks? Anyone have some other Kansas or Missouri recommendations?  What’s your all-time favorite state park?

  3. That bike is too cute! Is it tandem? Beautiful pics of the park. We rarely get out to visit state parks, but I’d love to do it more.

    • It is a tandem bike. It also disconnects and you can make it into a regular bike. Tandem is nice for those longer, hilly rides so dad can help her up the hills!

  4. Wow, that looks like such a beautiful park! Beautiful family, too! Did you run while your hubby and daughter biked? Hardcore!

  5. It looks like you guys had a fun time! I enjoy hiking but don’t get to make the trip too often. I’m looking forward to checking out a state park while on vacation in Colorado!
