2014 Blogging Goals Revisited!

2014 Blogging Goals Revisited

Last year, I had three goals for my blog {post here}. Here is how the year stacked up and the status of these three goals:

Goal #1: Focus on consistency and frequency of blog posts.

Since starting my new job in November, my blogging has gone by the wayside. I want my readers to keep coming back for more and the only way to do that is to be more reliable. Now, to set an achievable goal, I would like to post at least two to three times a week.

Status: With the new job, my frequency and consistency did not really improve this year. I averaged 6 posts a month. My highest consisted of a month with 9 posts and some months were as low was 3 postings.

Goal #2: Engage new readership.

To help get the ball rolling with this, I would like to connect with more bloggers. I tend to read the same group of bloggers and only comment on their posts every now and then. To increase my readership, I hope to branch out, meet new faces, and converse/ leave comments on a more regular basis. This likely won’t be something that I can do every day but I hope to work on my engagement at least three days per week.

Status: I think this goes hand in hand with my first goal. With less frequency in posting in 2014, I was at least able to maintain my readership. So while that target was missed, I had a very successful year connecting with more Bloggers in person at events like Ragnar, Princess Half Marathon, ZOOMA Annapolis, and the Fitness Magazine Meet & Tweet. However, I did not branch out and read/comment on more blogs. I think that this went by the wayside with my work and family commitments this year. My job is more draining than I would like to admit and most days, I seriously just want to be a vegetable on the couch at night and not think about blogging/commenting/social media. A year ago, this would bother me but I am coming to understand that this is okay for me and my blog. I need to leave that self imposed pressure to comment, tweet, etc. all the time by the wayside and do what works for me.

Goal #3: Pay attention to my numbers.

I have to admit that I do not watch my analytics at all, especially since I made the move from Blogger to WordPress over the summer. Now, I don’t want to get wrapped up in the numbers but I would like to at least take note of which posts are performing well and which ones are not. That way, I can gauge what my followers are interested in reading. Want to see more or less of something, please shoot me a message.

Status: After a moving to WordPress, I still haven’t paid attention to my numbers. And, honestly, sometimes it catches me off guard when a company approaches me to work together and I don’t have numbers to give them. Okay, it’s not that I don’t have numbers; I use a few plugins to give me a rough estimate. And, it’s not that I don’t care about the growth of my blog. I am just not in a position where I hope to make this my full-time job right now. And, I don’t want numbers to be the driving force on my blog. I don’t want to get caught up in over analyzing everything. Having a background in clinical research, I know that I have the tendency to go crazy with trends, stats, etc. However, I will acknowledge that this is an industry standard for working with brands so I finally broke down and installed Google Analytics on January 1st. Hello, can we say a few years late to the party.

There you have it! My 2014 Blogging Goals Revisited! I love seeing growth over the course of a year. I have learned so much about myself and where I hope to see my blog this coming year. And, just because I didn’t really nail these goals doesn’t mean that I don’t see this year as a success. In fact, this year was very eye opening and I ended it feeling like I was being more true to myself and my blog than ever before.

Needless to say, I’m very excited for 2015! How about you? Do you write and revisit goals? What makes a year successful to you?

  1. love that you installed GA - it's so fascinating to me to see trends, numbers, etc. thanks for sharing your goals from 2014 - i'd say you were true to yourself, which is most important!

    • Yes, I usually geek out over this kind of stuff… which is why I think I kept it away from my "fun" place. I don't want my blog to feel like work yet I had to join the club on this one!

Having goals to work towards is great, but they're there as motivation and cannot always be met. It seems like you made your job and family a priority over your blog, which is definitely not a bad thing. Stay true to you, and when that means you have time to write, interact with others, etc., then go for it! And kudos to you for being completely okay with that. 🙂

  3. I love you 🙂 Glad I got to see you at least once this year! oh wait, scratch that - I forgot about your non running related visit and the trip to the Zoo!!! yay! let's build on that in 2015. Stay true to who YOU are! You know what's important.

    • Not living near DC totally cramps my style. Although, there was a shooting at my old apartment complex in CP this week. So, maybe it's a great thing that we aren't there anymore!! I will see you soon 😉

  4. I barely look at my blog numbers either. I have a good idea if people liked my post based on comments I receive. But because it’s not my job I post what I want, not just what’s going to drive high numbers.

    • Love it! Yes, comments and interaction is always a good way to gauge how a post is received. Well, as long as they are genuine comments and not comments because it is a requirement of being part of a group… that is a whole new can of worms that could be opened!

  5. Love these posts. Even though blogging was not as consistent as you hoped at the beginning of 2014, I still enjoyed reading your posts as a new reader this year - quality trumps quantity for me 🙂

I thought it was pretty neat that WP sent me an overview of my year, but I think alot of it is lost on me. I love that people visit my little corner of the world, and are entertained by the crap that my brain vomits out, but I never want to get to the point that it starts feeling obligatory instead of fun. Play time with the Wonder Mutt or get a post done for the next day? Really. What do you THINK is going to win out, lol! 🙂

    • Yes, yes, yes. Especially to that obligatory instead of fun thing. For me, I hate writing when it is forced or there is a deadline. This is supposed to be my fun space! So, it's back to basics and I hope to say NO a lot more this year! By saying no to some opportunities, I hope that I will stay fresh and focused on interesting content for my readers!

And, Wonder Mutt will win out 100%!! How can you say no to that face?!

  7. Good that you can recognize where the boundary is and when to be true to yourself!

    • Thanks Sue! Back to basics for me 😉 And, this is the year of saying no. I successfully said no to a few opportunities already. And, honestly, despite not making some money off those things, I feel much better about not taking those opportunities because I don't think my readers would really appreciate the content. So this year, if my readers don't get something out of it or it's not something I'm uber passionate about, it's out! It's surprisingly freeing! 😉

  8. I just started a blog of my own and I'm like a sponge with all the information. I will check out the Google Analytics sounds like something I really need. I did make goals for last year and kept some didn't on others. I'm new to your blog but you do have a new follower 🙂

    • Thanks for commenting! It's always great to see some new faces around here. I love reading posts about blogging from other bloggers. I may start writing more about my process, tidbits of info that I have learned over the years… Sometimes it seems like the behind the scenes of blogging is one big secret!

    • PS. I tried to comment on your blog and I think it ate it!
