NYC Marathon Training: Week 3 & 4

To get you up to speed, here is my training recap of Week #1 and #2.

And, to be perfectly honest, weeks two and three of NYC marathon training didn’t even feel like marathon training. I’m having quite a few issues popping up and instead of ending up seriously injured, I decided to take it easy and not push it. After all, I still have 15 weeks before race day which is a reasonable amount of time to get it together {trying to stay optimistic here!} Week #3, I was not comfortable running at all. I tested the waters with two short runs and then decided to back off a little bit. I was least distracted from the fact that I didn’t want to run with a bit of travel for work. Week #4 was a slight improvement since nothing hurt while running. But, since all of those runs were done on a treadmill, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that road running will be okay.

Week #3. July 7 - July 13

Monday: Rest - foam rolling/icing/stretching

Tuesday: Rest - foam rolling/icing/stretching

Wednesday: 1 Miles (Easy) - 10:18 - I just wanted to test the waters with 1 mile. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great.

Thursday: 2 Miles (Easy) - 21:00/ 9:46 - Too much tenderness so I stopped.

Friday/ Saturday/ Sunday: Rest - foam rolling/icing/stretching

Week #4. July 14 - July 20

Monday: 2 Miles (Easy) - 19:27/ 9:45 - No tenderness so I consider that a win!

Tuesday: Rest

Wednesday: 4 Miles (Tempo) - 36:45/ 9:11 - Warm up followed by 2 @ 8:27 and an easy cooldown.

Thursday: 4 Miles (Tempo) - 36:19/ 9:05 - Warm up followed by 2 @ 8:27 and an easy cooldown.

Friday: Travel day home from San Antonio

Saturday/Sunday: HAPPY 30th BIRTHDAY TO ME! I celebrated and had way too much fun this weekend. Running didn’t happen and I’m okay with that. However, there were cupcakes!

NYC Marathon Training

I’m not going to let these two weeks stress me out. In fact, I hope that rest was what I needed to really dig in and move forward. And, if not, I’m okay with re-evaluating my goals for the fall. I’m curious to see how this week goes and if I will feel good enough for a long run this weekend. Fingers crossed!

Have you ever had a few disappointing weeks of running? How did you deal?

  1. I admit to being gun shy this training cycle giving I ended up in a brace last time but you have the right attitude. Always best to be safe than sorry :)

you are so early in, that i don't think an off week or two will really matter. you're right though — not being injured is the most important thing!

  3. I can't believe I'm already in week 8 of marathon training! October 5 is coming too fast! These last several weeks have been challenging with trips to New Jersey and Maine. My achilles and heel of my right foot still aren't 100%, but I'm determined to finish this journey towards 26.2 in Maine! Are you running Beach2Beacon Lisa?

    • Week 8?! Already!? That is crazy. I'm thinking Beach to Beacon is a go! I'm not sure how my foot will be but I will at least take it easy and enjoy it as a training run if it doesn't feel good enough to put in a hard effort.

  5. My first couple of weeks of training have looked like yours as well but not because of injury because of laziness! I'm like you though, not too stressed about it yet. This week will be better!

    • Yes! Hope your week was better. Mine was slightly improved in the foot department. I still took it easy on mileage since I don't want to get over eager! More to come this week!

Great attitude. I'm on vacation right now and having a hard time getting my runs in…trying not to worry about it. But I think you are still in a great spot and no need to worry! Happy Belated birthday! Love the cupcakes!

  8. You’ll be fine. Taking time to rest and make sure you don’t end up injured is so important! I don’t think enough runners pay attention or are in tune with their bodies to stay healthy. You have a great attitude and can’t wait to see how your training goes.

    • I just revamped my training to go a little easier on myself than I originally planned. I guess, as they say, $h!t happens! I just want to make it through the 26.2 in one piece!

Happy 30th!!! I wouldn't sweat the first few weeks. It is better to be careful then train and get injured. You are definitely being smart! I understand being on the verge of injury! It is no fun!!

  10. I have had a series of disappointing runs. I've slowed down and the enjoyment just wasn't there. I start training for NYC next week. I needed to turn it around, so I took an entire week off, which I haven't done in YEARS. Thing is, it worked! I am now feeling rested and ready to dig in.
