I wish I could report that NYC Marathon training is going exactly as planned but that just isn’t the case right now. Now, I hate to sound whiney because the past two weeks were an improvement. My foot is feeling a bit better and I do not have pain while running anymore. I do still have some tenderness post run. Plus, on a positive note, I was able to complete the Beach to Beacon 10k. Honestly, I was worried that I was going to have to back out of this race.
But, despite my slight improvements, I still feel really behind the curve on where I wanted to be for this training cycle. It’s really difficult for me to even think about deferring NYC Marathon this year. But, I know that I want to run a strong race and I want to PR the distance. With all the wonky foot issues and the lack of mileage, I’m really struggling mentally. But, last night, I came to the realization that I don’t want running to become something that gets me down. It is my stress relief from life and work. I don’t want running to become something I dread as I can’t hit the mileage, paces, or workouts prescribed by a training plan. So with those thoughts, I have decided that if I am unable to build myself up a bit mentally and physically over the next six weeks, I am not going to run the race. That isn’t meant to be a dramatic statement. I just want to take the pressure off myself and be okay with the idea of letting go of a marathon this year so that I can continue to reap the benefits of a sport that I love.
Have you ever had to give up a goal race for the sake of saving your relationship with your sport? What are your thoughts on building mental toughness? I would love to hear your inspiring thoughts!
