Peaks and Valleys: Adventures in Training Week 1 & 2

This year, I decided I want to get back to the roots of my blog. I originally started this little corner of the web to hold myself accountable to my training goals and plans. While my plans for the year are still a work in progress, one of my goals for the year is to regularly post my training progress, even if some weeks are better than others. I’m not sure if this will end up being a weekly or bi-weekly posting schedule, but I just hope to stick to it! When I log and report my fitness, I know that it really helps hold me accountable. And, with this weekly training recap, I also hope to include the highs and lows of my week, also known as the peaks and valleys of training.Peaks and Valleys: Adventures in Training Week 1 & 2

Since dealing with some issues with my piriformis and deferring my marathon, the months of November and December were spent slowly building up mileage and working on stretching. Now, I feel like I am ready to get a move on. I organized a training plan for the Glass Slipper Challenge and it is time to get to work! Here is a look at my first two weeks of January:

Week 1 - December 29 - January 4

Monday: 3.1 Easy Miles (A hilly run outside around West Point)
Tuesday: 3.6 Easy Miles (Relatively flat run around West Point)
Wednesday: Rest - Stretching
Thursday: Florida Bound!
Friday: Rest - Stretching
Saturday: 4 Easy Miles (Humidity is not my friend)
Sunday: 4 Easy Miles

Total Mileage: 14.7 (Just slightly under my goal of 15 miles for the week)

Week 2 - January 5 - January 11

Monday: Home from Florida
Tuesday: Rest - Stretching
Wednesday: 3 Miles (Treadmill)
Thursday: 3 Miles (Treadmill)
Friday: Strength Training
Saturday: 3 Miles (Treadmill)
Sunday: 8 Miles (Long Run)

Total Mileage: 17 Miles (Right on target with my goal for the week)

Peak of the Week:

Strength training was an added bonus for the week. Regularly adding strength is one of my big goals in the coming year. I hope to add a few days per week but this will require baby steps since I was so incredibly sore for a few days after the workout. And, I think I need to figure out how to make sure this isn’t lined up next to a weekend of running.

Valley of the Week:

I had the worst long run on Sunday. It was really nice to get outside but the pacing was terrible, my legs felt so heavy (thanks to the workout on Friday), and I just felt off my game. But, I hit my mileage for the week so even though the run sucked, I’m thankful that I was able to get out there.

What was your peak or valley of the week? What race do you have lined up next?

Lisa
