NYC Marathon Training: Week 1 & 2

The last week of June I finally decided to get a plan together via SmartCoach and commit to my NYC Marathon Training. That week put me twenty weeks from the starting line of the NYCM. So far, I am very slowly trying to get my act together. We traveled back and forth to Maine a few times due to a family emergency. And, with all that travel in mind, I call these few weeks a success. Plus, since the month of June was pretty low-key in terms of running, I don’t want to do too much too soon. In order to try my best to stay committed to this training cycle, I will be documenting my running here on my blog! Fingers crossed that I will stick to my plan!

Week #1. June 23 - June 29

Monday: 4 Miles (Progression) - 36:00 / 9:00

Tuesday: Rest

Wednesday: 4 Miles (Speed) - 34:41 / 8:40 - Warm up followed by 2×1600 in 7:45 with 800m jogs and an easy cooldown.

Thursday: 2 Miles (Recovery) - 22:26 / 11:13

Friday: Rest

Saturday: Kayaking

Sunday: Kayaking / 6 Miles (Long) - 56:50 / 9:28

Week #2. June 30 - July 6

Monday: Rest

Tuesday: 3 Miles (Easy) - 28:50 / 9:37

Wednesday: 5 Miles (Tempo) - 2.5 Miles - 22:25 / 8:58 - Warm Up then 8:15 pace for temp… This was supposed to be a five-mile run with 3 miles at tempo. At 2.5 miles in to the run, I was kicked off the treadmill thanks to the crazy thunder, lightening, and rainstorm brewing outside. I’m thankful someone was looking out for me so that I didn’t eat treadmill if the power went out!

Thursday: Rest

Friday: 3.1 Miles (Progression) - 27:50 / 8:59 - I opted out of running the LL Bean 10k in exchange for sleeping in! The hubby and I still managed to get out and run a patriotic 5k in honor of the Fourth of July!

Saturday: Rest

Sunday: 8 Miles (Long) - 1:18:19 / 9:47

I cut this 10-mile run short thanks to a bit of foot pain. I have never had foot pain before and wonder if it is from my Altras. I have worn them for up to 6 miles previously and I’m not sure if the bit of extra mileage tired out my feet. Either way, I’m not taking any chances this early on in the game and will take two full days of rest before attempting another run. Lots of ice and rolling going on over here too!

Who else is gearing up for fall marathon training or in the first few weeks of their plan? Anyone interested in linking up for accountability, especially when we get in to those long runs?

  1. Nice job with your workouts. Did you win the NYCM lottery or are you fundraising? I really want to do that race (and all the majors!

    • I got in via lottery! Since we are living in NY for the next few years, I thought I would throw my hat in the ring. I never expected to get in the first time I entered!

  2. woohoo! even though you aren't doing MCM we can be virtual training and accountability buddies :)

  4. So exciting!! Have you run the NYCM before? it's amazing!!! I will be there cheering! :) Also, kayaking must have been awesome cross training.

  5. Sorry to hear about your family emergency. We are headed up to Boston/NH for 2 weeks next week and I'm a bit nervous of getting all of my training runs in. My hubby isn't coming and my parents are babysitting my neices for 4 days so I won't have much "help"…fingers crossed they can watch the boys so I can get my runs in!

    • I have a hard time fitting in workouts when I travel. I'm better about getting it done when I am visiting family, like when we went to Maine. I'm in San Antonio for work and so far I am 1 for 2 days in terms of working out. Need to stay consistent this training cycle! Sometimes it is just so tough when family and work are calling!

Great first weeks of training! Good call with the foot pain. I am taking a SUP class this week. I can't wait to have a bit of cross training with something new!! That kayaking looked fun!!!

    • Not gonna lie, I'm not a huge fan of SUP. My mother-in-law has a board and I have it a brief try a year ago. I think I need to get my big girl panties on and give it another whirl. Hope you have a good experience!

Yay I'm so glad you contacted me about the directory! This is so cool. It is a dream of mine to run the NYC marathon!
It sounds like you had a very solid start to your training. Excited to follow you through the rest of it! :)

I'm training for a half, but would totally link up with you! I'm glad you got off the 'mill before the power went out. One time some dumb dumb at my gym unplugged my treadmill and it sure stops quick! Not fun!
